Shirley Powell McPhillips ’62 is the author of Poem Central: Word Journeys for Readers and Writers, a book for educators in grades 5-12, literacy leaders, and students
studying and preparing for a teaching career.
Emilie Friend Swearingen ’68 serves on the Kure Beach (N.C.) Town Council and is active in several nonprofits and community organizations. She recently spoke at a congressional briefing in opposition to seismic testing in the Atlantic Ocean. She worked more than 30 years in state and local government after receiving her MPA at North Carolina State University in 1976.
1970s
Martha Brown Somers ’79 is pleased to announce that her son, John Somers, will be following in the family tradition by enrolling in fall 2014 as a member of the Longwood Class of 2018. John’s grandmother, his mother, aunt and first cousin all are graduates of Longwood. John is the first male member of the family to
attend the university.
1980s
John E. Hudson ’80 is the composer of “Welcome Christmas,” a Christmas carol published by
the General Board of Discipleship for United Methodist Church. The sheet music can be downloaded at www.gbod.org/resources/welcome-christmas.
David Whitus ’83 is the first Longwood graduate to lead the town of Farmville as mayor. A native of Farmville, Whitus, the director of administration, marketing and development at The Woodland, garnered nearly 48 percent of the vote in the three-way May 6 contest.
1990s
Dr. Tammy Estes Hanna ’92, who received her Ed.D. in educational leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University, was appointed principal of Edward E. Drew Jr. Middle School in Fredericksburg. She previously was assistant principal at A.G. Wright Middle School in Stafford.
Robin Burroughs Davis ’90, MS ’94, is the associate dean of students and director of citizenship education at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H.
Dr. Kurt Kreassig ’90 is chair of teacher education and interdisciplinary studies at Regent University in Virginia Beach.
Dr. Tracey McGregor Mason ’91 is an associate professor of chemistry
at Stevenson University in Baltimore.
2000s
Megan Langley Funk ’05 and her husband, Matt Funk, are the parents of Matthew Whalen Funk Jr., born April 2, 2014.
Meredith Carr Flory ’06 and W. Reese Flory ’06 are the parents of Delilah Flory, their first child, who was born April 25, 2013. In May 2013, Meredith completed her master’s degree in English with a concentration in children’s literature at Kansas State University, where she now works as an instructor in the English department. Reese is also working on a graduate degree at K-State in music education while he serves full-time as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Band Program, where he is a pianist, at Ft. Riley. He completed his first deployment with the 1st Infantry Division in 2012.

Kelsey Pardue ’14, former women’s soccer standout, made her debut in June with the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League. Pardue, who was called up from the Washington Spirit Reserves of the W-League, is the first player from the women’s soccer program at Longwood to play at the sport’s highest level.

Nursing Scholarship Fund
A Longwood scholarship fund has been set up in memory of Melissa Haislip ’13, a member of the first graduating class in the nursing program, who was killed June 18 in a car accident.
Donations to the Melissa Anne Haislip Memorial Scholarship, which will assist a current nursing student, can be made payable to Longwood University Foundation (in memory of Melissa Haislip), 201 High St., Farmville, VA 23909. Haislip worked as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond.
