1960s
Judith Robertson Wobbrock ’61 and her husband will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in June 2014.
Glenda C. Booth ’66 was appointed to the advisory council of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) of the College of William & Mary. The council advises VIMS in its mission, mandated by Virginia law, to “maintain its position as the preeminent institution of coastal and estuarine research, education and advisory services.” Booth also is serving on the board of the Virginia Outdoor Writers Association. Her son, Delegate Scott Surovell, is in his third term representing Virginia’s 44th district (Fairfax County). Booth also is a freelance writer. One of her articles appeared in the November/December 2013 issue of Audubon magazine and another was published in the Dec. 13 issue of Virginia Living magazine. She writes regularly for Virginia Wildlife magazine, the Beacon newspapers and other publications.
Dr. Mayling Simpson ’68 has devoted her career to improving the lives of people in developing countries through public health policies and practical actions. Simpson has lived and worked in the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Africa.
1970s
Rosalind Crenshaw Cutchins ’79 was named executive director of the Children’s Center. Cutchins has been with the Children’s Center as the program director since the agency was created in October 1983.
Martha Brown Summers ’79 is pleased to announce that her son, John Summers, was accepted as a member of the Longwood Class of 2018 and will be following in the family tradition by enrolling as a Longwood Lancer in fall 2014. John’s grandmother, his mother, aunt and first cousin all are graduates of Longwood. He is the first male in the family to attend the university.
1980s
Elizabeth Parrott Jones ’81 received National Board Certification in World Languages other than English (French), class of 2013, sponsored by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She is still teaching—33 years and counting!
Sandra Forrest ’82 joined Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville as a full-time faculty member in August 2013. She serves as an associate professor of information systems technology. Previously she taught Microsoft IT (Information Technology) Academy classes for Martinsville City Public Schools, served as Martinsville High School’s internship coordinator and worked as a job specialist for the Jobs for Virginia Graduates Grant Program. In addition to teaching, she has served as the director of information technology and career and technical education programs. She left Martinsville City Schools with 31 years of service. Forrest has been an adjunct professor at Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) since 1993. She earned her Master of Arts degree in computer science from Hollins University and her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Longwood.
Bob Weatherly ’82 is the author of Windows of Wonder: Eight Timeless Tales for Today and Tomorrow, a 132-page e-book published in March 2013 by Abbott Press. Weatherly, a private investor who lives in Crestview, Fla., described it as “a storybook of spiritual adventures filled with the magical, the mysterious and the mystical.” People can learn more about the book by visiting Weatherly on Facebook or by visiting abbottpress.com. Weatherly, an Appomattox native, is the son of the late Dr. Mark Weatherly, who taught in Longwood’s education department from 1970-88, and the late Katherine Burge Weatherly ’42.
Benjamin “Ben” Wofford Smith ’82 now serves as the vice president of the Center for Aging and Disability Policy of the Lewin Group in Falls Church. Smith and his wife, Christy, welcomed a new baby boy, Robert Christian Smith, on July 20, 2013. The Smiths have four other children: Jocelyn Smith-Shifflett, Sydney Smith, Benjamin Smith Jr. and William Smith.
Horace J. Scruggs III ’85 is the faculty director of the Piedmont Virginia Community College Chorus. He also is the choral director for Fluvanna County High School and directs the Fluvanna Community Singers. He has taught all grade levels (K-12) and has worked professionally with school, community and church choirs and ensembles. In addition to his bachelor’s degree in music education from Longwood, he holds a master’s degree in music education with a choral conducting concentration from Shenandoah Conservatory. He also holds a Certificate in Music Production from the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
1990s
Kandra Brummett ’91 is the author of a children’s book titled Willow’s Farm Adventure. Willow is a good girl — a little active and a lot tomboy. She knows how to follow the rules, at least part of the time. But sometimes life presents an adventure that is too good to pass up. Today someone left the gate open and she couldn’t resist the temptation to visit her friends at the farm. This book is available at www.amazon.com in e-book format only.
Jennifer Kirschenman ’93 was promoted to vice president of operations at National Bank, working from the Hethwood Office in Blacksburg. Kirschenman began her career at National Bank in 1994 as a part-time teller. She worked in the bank’s teller training and mortgage departments before taking leadership of the Customer Assistance Center in 1999. During this time, she also oversaw the bank’s Internet and phone banking systems. In 2006, Kirschenman was promoted to assistant vice president. She has managed the bank’s Memorial Drive Office in Pulaski since 2008. In her new position, Kirshenman will oversee the bank’s internal operations. In addition to her degree from Longwood, Kirschenman is a graduate of the Virginia Banker’s School of Bank Management. She currently resides in Giles County with her husband, Jay.
Jennifer Clark Baucom ’94 is co-owner of Bayside Children’s Therapy Network, a pediatric occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy clinic in Gloucester. She and her husband, James, have two daughters: Bella, 14, and Lily, 9.
Dr. Grayson Frederick Lipford ’94 is an assistant professor and program coordinator for the Exercise Science Program at Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. He and his wife, Lauri Elizabeth Lipford, welcomed a son, Logan William Lipford, on Nov. 17, 2011.
2000s
Stephanie M. Horton ’00 was appointed as an assistant principal at Hugo A. Owens Middle School in Chesapeake in July 2013.
Brian J. Plum ’02 married Stephanie Austin on June 9, 2012. Brian has a B.A. in history from Longwood and a M.A. in history from George Mason University. He served in the Peace Corps in Guatemala and is the son of Catherine Stafford Hawkins ’76.

Trey Nichols ’03 and James Holtslag ’04 opened The Heart and Trotter Butchery, a whole animal butcher shop in San Diego, Calif., in November. They pride themselves on offering meat exclusively from local, sustainable, antibiotic and hormone-free family farms. Kathryn Behnken Malone ’03 and her husband, Adam, welcomed a son, Decklen William Malone, born July 10, 2013.
Mike Shetley ’03 is the athletic trainer at Appomattox County High School (ACHS), which in March 2013 became the 11th school in the nation, and the first in Virginia, to receive a Safe Sports School award from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. The award recognizes schools for their leadership in following established health care safety guidelines, utilizing and maintaining proper equipment, and providing appropriate medical personnel for student-athletes. ACHS earned a three-year renewable designation as a 1st Team, the highest level of recognition. Shetley, who has a master’s degree in athletic training from California University of Pennsylvania, and his wife, Kathleen Marie Whitney Shetley ’13, recently started teaching fitness classes at Longwood’s Fitness Center. Both are in the Army Reserve: He has 16 years of service and is a sergeant first class; she has six years of service and is a sergeant. Mike was elected public relations chair of the Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association on Jan. 16, 2014.
Kelly Mezic Atkinson MS ’04 is the lower school science lab teacher, upper school environmental science teacher and ecology club sponsor at the Fuqua School in Farmville. Prior to joining Fuqua, she taught for more than 10 years in the Cumberland County school system. She is married to Robert Atkinson, and they have two young daughters: Rudee and Brynn.
Kittina “Ms. Kitty” Chappell Brown ’04 welcomed her first child, Jameson Oliver Brown, born Sept. 27, 2011. She also joined the National Council of Teachers of English in 2013 and is presenting at the NCTE 2014 conference in Washington, D.C.
Paul Hetterich ’04 completed his first Ironman triathlon in August 2013. The 140.6-mile race took place in Mont Tremblant, Canada. He completed the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile marathon in 14 hours and 8 minutes. Currently a scientist at Health Diagnostic Laboratory in Richmond, he was a brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon while at Longwood. He and his wife, Megan Lohman Hetterich ’04, married just after college and live in Midlothian with their two young children.
Jessica Carter Wright ’04 is an associate editor of LeisureMedia360 and is now head editor of the new wedding publication, Bridebook, which began in Roanoke and will be published across Virginia within the next two years. In a recent story, she reminisced about Thanksgiving dinner at Longwood and included a recipe for her favorite dish at that dinner: baked Alaska.
Lori Ashmore Condit ’05 and her husband, Matthew, welcomed their first child, Avery Ann Condit, on May 20, 2013. Lori is an editor at C2 Technologies, and her husband is a computer engineer with the Department of Defense. They live in Elkridge, Md.
Quintin Lewis ’05 is a physical therapist at Centra Southside Community Hospital and was featured in a newspaper ad for the hospital. He was a biology major at Longwood.
Daniel Reynolds ’06 and Sara Winnik ’09 were married Nov. 9, 2013. They are the proud parents of two pit bulls, Molly and Elroy, and a cat, Furball. Sara started her own massage business in June 2013.
Erica Dickson ’07 and Josh Howell ’05 were married on July 19, 2013, in Norfolk.
David T. Peck ’07 was promoted to assistant principal of Mary Williams Elementary School in Prince William County.
Dara Bazar Tucker MS ’09 is teaching fourth/fifth grades in the lower school at the Fuqua School in Farmville. Tucker has worked as a classroom teacher, as an education specialist with the Virginia Department of Education and as an adjunct professor at Longwood. A National Board Certified teacher, she is married to Zach Tucker, and they have a young son, Dalton.
Shelby Zanks ’09 works with severely autistic children in the Henrico Public Schools.
Michele Anderson ’10 works at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond. “I feel like every day, I help children and their families,” she said.

Juli Liebig ’11 was named assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., for the 2013-14 season. She received her undergraduate degree from Longwood in kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science and later completed a master’s degree in psychology at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., while serving as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. Liebig is a native of Queen Anne, Md., and joined Rhodes after spending the previous two years as an assistant at the Division III collegiate level. Liebig is a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).
Tyler Jason Sluka ’11 and Michelle Renee Brechtel ’11 were married on Nov. 16, 2013, in Byron, Ga., where they reside. Tyler received his degree in criminal justice and is currently a police officer for Macon-Bibb County in Georgia. Michelle, who received her degree in therapeutic recreation, is a recreation specialist at Coliseum Center for Behavioral Health in Macon, Ga.
Tucker Dowdy ’12 joined Commonwealth Commercial Partners brokerage division as a sales and leasing associate. Dowdy specializes in condominium sales and leasing, office and industrial landlord representation, and office and industrial tenant/buyer representation. Prior to joining CCP, which is located in Glen Allen, he worked in the land and development division of Boddie-Noell.
Stacy Eubanks ’12 is a speech-language pathologist at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center.
Daniel Lane ’12 and Jacqueline Wells ’13 were married Aug. 24, 2013, at Maymont Park in Richmond. Jacqueline finished her degree in elementary education at Longwood in December 2013. Daniel is currently pursuing a medical degree at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine.
Taryn Langmead ’12 is an art teacher at Edward W. Wyatt Middle School in Emporia.
Erica Mangum ’12 is a human resources reporting specialist for UBS in London. An investment bank headquartered in Zurich and Basel, Switzerland, UBS is present in all major financial centers worldwide and employs about 61,000 people around the world. It has offices in more than 50 countries.
Jessica Rudloff ’12 was named an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Washington College in Chestertown, Md. After graduating from Longwood with a degree in kinesiology, Rudloff used her final year of eligibility at Drexel University in Philadelphia. During her year at Drexel, she was an impact player on an attacking unit that led the Dragons to their third Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) playoff appearance in a row. She was also named to the CAA All-Academic Team. Rudloff has coached at multiple lacrosse camps and was a player-coach for Global Players in the Berlin Open and Prague Cup in 2012.
Katherine McKinley Buffey ’13 and Thomas Langley Bulifant Jr. ’13 were married on Dec. 21, 2013.
Brittany Browne ’13 is a kindergarten teacher at Sanford Elementary School in Newport News.
Amy Lewis ’13 of Lewisville received the Bob McCloskey Insurance Big South Conference Female Graduate Fellowship, established by the conference in 2005 to recognize student-athletes who intend to pursue postgraduate studies. She was accepted to the occupational therapy program at Winston-Salem State University. A field hockey player, Lewis received the Female Lancer Outstanding Service Award as a junior. The award is presented annually to one female athlete who goes above and beyond and has positively influenced her school, the surrounding community and the world through her service. A four-time Lancer Scholar-Athlete Award recipient, Lewis also was a three-time member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Gladiator National Academic Squad.
